Burkan and Valan were already there waiting for him.
âI brought him,â Dion said, standing respectfully.
âMm, good job. Go on.â
âYes sir.â Dion and Darion, who stuck to Dion like glue, left.
âGood of you to come,â Burkan said.
âYes,â Kang Oh said. âThough I really didnât want to come.â Kang Oh held his tongue.
âI heard you killed those fanatics. I also heard that you left the Evil Godâs sacred treasure with the Rakan Church.â
âAh, yes.â
âSo I came to give you your second trial, but⊠You havenât changed much since our last spar.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âYouâre weak. You havenât developed at all.â
âIâve gotten stronger though,â Kang Oh said clearly.
âYouâve gotten stronger? Itâs like you went from being an ant to a horned ant.â
It doesnât matter whether youâre an ant or a horned ant; I could squash you with one push of my finger. Thatâs all you are, an ant!
âAhem.â
âAnyhow, youâre a complete disappointment. So Iâll give you one last chance. Of course, if you donât accept or you fail, then Iâll be taking the demon sword and adamantium with me.â
âUgh.â
Guardian of the Continent. He really didnât want to do it, but he didnât have any other choice. Yeah, losing the adamantium would hurt, but he couldnât afford to lose the demon sword. Phew!
âWhat is it?â
âItâs simple. In half a year, weâll spar again. Become as strong as you possibly can by then.â
Then, a quest popped up.
[Trial to Become Valanâs Successor 2]
The second test to see whether you are worthy of succeeding Valan as the Guardian of the Continent, one who protects the land from the shadows.
In half a year, you will spar with Valan again. At that time, show Valan your power and potential!
Remaining Time: 180 days.
Difficulty: Nightmare.
Minimum Requirements: Guardian of the Continentâs Successor.
Reward: Trial to Become Valanâs Successor 3.
Failure: Both Demon Sword Ubist and the adamantium gemstone will be returned to Valan.
âHow strong do I have to get?â
âUntil Iâm satisfied.â Valanâs expression seemed to say, âEasy, right?â.
âSo how much is that?â
âI said until Iâm satisfied.â Valan scowled.
Kang Oh did the same. âSeriously, just tell me how muchâŠ!â
âAround a Swordmasterâs level?â He said Swordmaster so nonchalantly, like he was referring to the neighborâs dog.
âYou crazy bastard! You want me to become a Master?â
Forget becoming a master, raising his swordsmanship to high rank in half a year would be hard enough. But what did he say? A master?
Kang Oh was pissed.
âHave you gone senile?â
âWant to die?â Valanâs body released killing intent. His eyes were like that of a dragonâs.
âDamn it.â Kang Oh realized that he was screwed. Heâd messed with the one person he shouldnât have messed with.
But there was always a way out of a situation. That âway outâ was obviously Burkan.
âNow, now. Please calm down. Honestly, becoming a master is impossible within half a year. And you shouldnât have said that. Apologize.â Burkan stepped in between them, and acted as a mediator.
Fortunately, Kang Oh decided to apologize right away. However, Valan spoke before he even got the chance.
âHmph. Whatever. Iâll see you in half a year. If Iâm not satisfied with you then, Iâll kill you,â he said, and then turned around and left.
âHe might not be able to hear me from here.â Kang Oh thought. âHey, you crazy⊠Mhmm!â Kang Oh was about to curse him out, but Burkan quickly covered his mouth.
âYou canât. Master Valan will definitely hear you.â
Kang Oh nodded his head. Then, Burkan let him go.
âBrother.â
âHmm?â
âHow strong do I have to become to get acknowledged by that old man⊠Ahem, Master Valan?â
He didnât want to give up on Ubist or the adamantium. Plus, his pride was on the line now.
Whenever he met with Valan, his self-confidence would take a hit. Valan would either ignore him or demean him by telling him that he was weak, even though he was called the Human Dragon back in the day!
âI need to become so strong that I completely shock the old man.â Kang Oh clenched his fist.
âWhy donât you try getting Demonic Swordsmanship up to high rank? When you reach High Rank Demonic Swordsmanship, then I can teach you my secret technique,â Burkan said.
âI see.â
Gladiator Master, Burkanâs secret technique! If he learned that, then heâd definitely become a lot stronger.
âYouâll also have to increase your level, stats, and skill proficiency as much as you can. So I have some adviceâŠâ
âWhat is it?â
âI know a place where you can quickly get stronger.â
âWhere is it?â Kang Ohâs eyes gleamed.
âThe west.â
* * *
The western part of Arth.
A place with vast grasslands, snow-covered fields, dense coniferous forests, etc.
Non-human, hostile species lived there such as orcs or trolls.
In order to enter the western part of Arth, one needed to travel along the âMonster Roadâ. He was currently on the Monster Road, riding on horseback. Alone.
âHmm.â
As he passed through the Monster Road, he recalled what Burkan had told him. âWhen I was young, I polished my skills there. After all, the west is a place of constant conflict and battle.â
Conflict and battle⊠So many non-human species lived there, and these species would invariably war against each other. As a result, battle was a way of life in the west.
Burkan believed that if one were to continuously fight there and survive, then theyâd become much stronger.
It did make a lot of sense.
Kang Oh followed Burkanâs advice and came to the Monster Road.
He planned on staying here for half a year, and strive to become as strong as he could.
Heâd told Eder and Sephiro about what had happened, and said that heâd be operating alone for half a year.
âHmm. Iâve been falling behind lately. I guess itâs time for me to level up too.â Sephiro was clearly overjoyed that heâd be able to escape Kang Ohâs grasp for a while.
âIndeed.â Whereas Eder looked extremely disappointed. As expected of Eder. He really was the best.
âEither follow Mr. Sephiro or help Mr. Man Bok with his work. Make sure you rest along the way, and read the books that youâve always wanted to read,â Kang Oh said.
He was basically telling him to have a good time while he was gone.
âUnderstood.â Eder nodded his head.
âTake care.â Kang Oh said his goodbyes, and then met up with Man Bok.
He explained his situation to Man Bok, and asked him to take care of the fish business, as well as the Moss Cave.
âDonât worry about me.â Man Bok beamed.
Neigh.
His horseâs âneighâ brought him back to the present day.
âHuh?â
The road was divided into two paths.
âLetâs go to the left.â Kang Oh lightly kicked the horseâs sides and swung the reins.
Sometime laterâŠ
âIâm here.â
Kang Oh arrived in an area too small to be called a city, yet inhabited with too many people, or non-human species, to be called a village.
This was the neutral zone, Kasten!
It was a huge marketplace for mercenaries.
* * *
Wherever there was battle, there were mercenaries.
The west was a place of never-ending battle. This obviously made the west a place where mercenaries flourished.
Kasten was a place that these mercenaries used as their home base.
Of course, this was the west, which was known as a non-humanâs paradise. Thus, an absolute majority of the mercenaries were non-human.
There were very few humans or players here.
After all, most of the non-human species here were hostile towards humans. Thus, they would attack any human on sight.
Fortunately, attacking anyone in Kasten was strictly prohibited.
It was the only place in all the west where Kang Oh could walk around safely.
âLetâs go, shall we?â Kang Oh walked over to the Kasten Mercenary Association.
The Kasten Mercenary Association only existed in the west, and in order to be a mercenary here, one was required to join the organization.
Creak.
Kang Oh opened the door and went inside. There were countless non-humans inside.
There were long-eared elves, pig-like orcs, anthromorphs (human-like, but with a beastâs ears, nose, and tail), as well as other non-human species with varying special characteristics and traits.
Kang Oh ignored the non-humans and walked over to an anthromorph who appeared to be a worker here.
The anthromorph looked like he came straight out of Star Wars; he looked like Chewbacca. He was a half-bear, and his body was covered in brown fur.
âI came to become a mercenary.â
âIf you want to become a mercenary, then take off your helmet and show me your face,â Chewbacca, no, the anthromorph said.
Kang Oh removed his Baramut helmet.
Then, the other non-humans looked at him with curiosity and hostility. Their species all differed, but they were all thinking the same thing.
âItâs a human!â
âYouâre the second human that came here to become a mercenary,â the bearman said.
âAnother person came before me?â
âThatâs right. They came four days ago.â
âMm, anyway, I want to become a mercenary,â Kang Oh said.
âFollow the path west of here. Thereâs a monster called a Blade Beast that inhabits the first mountain you see. Kill one and bring back its fang. Thatâs the test to become a mercenary. Tell me your name after youâve brought back the fang.â
In other words, âIf you canât bring the fang, then youâre not worth knowingâ.
âUnderstood.â Kang Oh put his helmet back on and left the Mercenary Association.
ThenâŠ
âItâs a human⊠Should we kill him?â a bulldog-faced anthromorph whispered.
âLetâs do it.â The other anthromorph (dog ears, nose, and tail) nodded his head. He looked like a Shih Tzu.
The two anthromorphs left the association and secretly followed Kang Oh.
* * *
âHmm, what is this?â
Kang Oh knew that someone was following him. But the problem was that there was really no reason to be following him.
Heâd only just arrived in the west, so why would someone be following him now?
âI guess Iâll figure it out once I leave.â
Kasten was constructed over a vast grassland area. So when he left, heâd know who was following him. There wasnât anywhere to hide after all.
As the Mercenary Association worker had told him, he went through the western road.
A short while laterâŠ
âIs it them?â
There were two people following him. They werenât watching him; they were clearly following him. They hadnât even tried to hide it.
Kang Oh stopped, and the two anthromorphs approached him.
âYou have business with me?â Kang Oh asked.
âOf course.â The bulldog-faced anthromorph grinned. It was quite unpleasant.
âWhat is it? Do you know who I am?â
âI do, Human!â
âSo?â Kang Oh asked. âWhat do you want?â Kang Ohâs expression soured. Of course, it wasnât visible due to his helmet.
âThereâs a saying in our tribe. âThe only good human is a dead human!â Right?â he said to the Shih Tzu.
âYep, yep.â The Shih Tzu nodded unhesitatingly.
âHaa.â Kang Oh couldnât believe this. Heâd heard that the west really hated humans, but he didnât expect people to come out and attack him. âYou donât have anything against me, but you want to kill me just because Iâm human?â
âGot it in one.â The bulldog kept up that disgusting smile of his; it really made Kang Oh want to punch his face in.
âHehe.â The Shih Tzu sported a nasty smile as well.
Kang Oh exploded with rage.
Heâd been insulted and demeaned by Valan, which had really wounded his pride. Kang Oh was really pissed off right now.
âBut now you bastards are looking down on me too!?â
âHey, you pieces of shit! You think that you can talk to me like that just because Valan did!?â Kang Oh roared.
