âDid you know, Mr. Seong Gook?â Kang Seol Hee asked.
âKnow what?â
âOne of our teams unfortunately failed their mission.â
âReally?â
âYes, itâs true. Which team do you think it was?â Seol Hee asked.
Seong Gook didnât know which team had failed, so he stared at the team whoâd failed last time, Team Jake and Hye Yeon.
âYou failed again?â
âNo!â
Jake feverishly shook his hands.
âHeâs right. We didnât fail today!â Hye Yeon, who was beside him, said.
âHmm. Then who?â
Seong Gook looked over the other teams. There was someone trying to avoid his gaze.
âItâs you!â
Seong Gook smirked.
âItâs not Team Jake and Hye Yeon. Now, everyone please look at the screen. The failing team isâŠâ
Drum roll.
The team that appeared on the screen wasâŠ
âTeam Park Bae Shik and Lisa!â Seol Hee loudly revealed.
âAah, Mr. Bae Shik,â Jeon Seong Gook called disappointingly.
âWhat happened?â
âAhem. It just happened.â
âAah, you couldnât forget the taste of the salty sikhye, could you?â
Seong Gook smiled impishly.
Bae Shik had failed his mission during Chuseok weekend, and was forced to drink a salty sikhye as punishment; heâd promptly spat it out soon after.
Thatâs what Seong Gook was referring to.
âIf I have to drink it again, then Iâm spitting it at you,â Bae Shik said.
âThen letâs move on to Team Bae Shik and Lisaâs punishment.â
As soon as Seol Hee finished speaking, the staff prepared a box filled with punishment cards.
The female rapper, Lisa, picked out one of the punishment cards.
âHoh, Team Bae Shik and Lisaâs punishment is⊠Drinking extreme juice!â Seong Gook stated.
âExtreme juice? What is that?â Bae Shik asked, his eyes filled with suspicion.
âItâs a nutritious beverage made by our writers using all sorts of healthy ingredients, butâŠâ
Seol Hee smiled and added, âI canât say it tastes good.â
Clap.
She clapped her hands, and the staff brought over two cups of extreme juice.
âMm.â
Jae Woo scowled upon seeing the extreme juice. Soo Ah, who sat beside him, had a similar reaction to it.
âY-You want me to drink this?â
Bae Shik trembled.
Extreme juice.
Not only was it a strange combination of brown and green, but it seemed thick and watery at the same time; a truly bizarre texture. It stunk too.
âIsnât this poop?â
Lisa looked like she wanted to cry.
âItâs not. Itâs a nutritional drink made of all sorts of healthy ingredients,â Seol Hee firmly said.
âAnd if you spit it out halfway, you need to drink another one,â Seong Gook grinned and said.
ThenâŠ
âLisa, letâs decide who drinks this with rock-paper-scissors. How about it?â
âOne person drinks both?â
âYeah. One of us has to live after all.â
âYou got it. Is that ok with you?â
Lisa, whoâd agreed with Bae Shikâs proposal, stared at Seong Gook.
Seong Gook checked with Jin Cheol; he okâd it.
âThatâs fine. ThenâŠâ
Bae Shik and Lisa played rock-paper-scissors to decide their fate.
The winner wasâŠ
âThe one who makes the offer always seems to lose stuff like this.â
Soo Ah clicked her tongue.
âSeems like it.â
Jae Woo nodded his head in agreement.
âUheoook!â
Park Bae Shik was tearing his hair out, while Lisa was jumping around, shouting âI lived!â.
âNow, Mr. Bae Shik. Please take your punishment,â Seol Hee said, her expression firm.
âHaha, here.â
Seong Gook gave him the extreme juice.
Bae Shik pinched his nose and drank it all down.
Once he drank the juice, his face seemed to contort like a wrinkled newspaper.
âBleh!â
âAah, are you going to spit it out again?â
Seong Gook raised his voice.
âYou have to drink another one if you do,â Seol Hee quickly said.
Gulp!
Ultimately, Bae Shik swallowed it all down.
âBleh! Please give me some water!â
He caught his breath and sought water.
âOne more.â
Seong Gook grinned and passed him the second drink.
âYou demon!â
âDrink it down in one shot like a man.â
âUgh.â
In the end, Bae Shik finished off the other drink as well.
With his punishment done with, Bae Shik plopped into his seat. Lisa patted his back, consoling him.
âHow did it taste?â Seong Gook asked.
âI-It tasted like sewage waterâŠâ
His body shook as if recalling the taste of the extreme juice.
âNow, please give Mr. Bae Shik a round of applause for getting through the punishment.â
Clap, clap, clap.
The sound of applause resounded throughout the studio, though it didnât make Bae Shik feel any better.
After that, Seong Gook chatted with each of the contestants; once he was finished, their total reward showed up on the screen.
â10 million won ($10,000 USD)!â
The only teams that had completed all of their missions were Team Oga and Soo Ah, and Team Tae Gyu and Se Hwa. Their total reward thus far was 10 million won.
When he saw the reward, Jae Woo couldnât help but smile.
âMr. Seong Gook.â
âYes, Ms. Seol Hee?â
âDo you know what the level 5 dungeon is?â
âHoo, hoo. Who do you think I am? Of course I do.â
âWhat is it then?â
âItâs the Tarnatose Prison!â Seong Gook confidently said.
âExactly. Itâs the renowned Tarnatose Prison!â
Seol Hee raised her voice.
âItâs where Bart, who is one of the Numbers and is considered the most talented high school gamer, made history,â Seong Gook said.
âIndeed. Team Oga and Soo Ah, and Team Tae Gyu and Se Hwa will take on this dungeon.â
âHoo, hoo. Iâm really looking forward to it,â Seong Gook chimed in.
âWhat kind of missions will our Dungeon Conquering Men/Girls participate in? Will they have to beat Mr. Bartâs time?â Seol Hee said with both excitement and anxiety.
âHoo, hoo. How will it turn out?â Seong Gook replied.
âPlease look forward to it. Itâll be even better next week!â
âI hope you all tune in next week too!â
Seol Hee and Seong Gook waved with bright expressions.
âCut!â
That was the end of the shoot.
âGood job.â
Jae Woo slightly extended his hand.
âYou too.â
Jae Woo and Soo Ah softly shook hands just for the hell of it.
Then, Yoon Se Hwa approached them with Tae Gyu close behind.
âI have something to say,â Se Hwa said.
She glanced at Jae Woo too.
âAll four of us.â
* * *
Jae Woo, Soo Ah, Tae Gyu, and Se Hwa entered a vacant waiting room.
Though there were chairs and a table available, they leaned against opposite walls and stared at each other.
âŠ
A strange silence ensued.
âWhat did you want to say?â Soo Ah asked first.
Yoon Se Hwa briefly bit her lip, made up her mind, and said, âI hate you.â
Soo Ah furrowed her brow. âWas she going to go on about that again?â
âYou hate me too, right?â she continued.
âI donât⊠like you,â Soo Ah said, staring directly at her.
âSo letâs have a match.â
âExcuse me?â
Soo Ah couldnât understand what she was alluding to. âWhy is she being like this?â.
âLetâs have a match,â Yoon Se Hwa said, glaring at her.
âExplain it so she can understand.â
Jae Woo, who was listening cross-armed, intervened. Then, Tae Gyu raised his hand.
âAh, may I explain?â
âGo ahead,â Soo Ah said.
âItâs simple. Weâll make a bet, and whoever loses will have to pay the price.â
âA bet?â Jae Woo asked.
âWe have just the thing: the Tarnatose Prison.â
âSo you want to challenge us to an escape game,â Jae Woo said.
âWhat is an escape game?â Soo Ah asked.
âAn escape game isâŠâ
Jae Woo gave her a detailed explanation of what an escape game was.
The more time passed, the stronger the Tarnatose Prisonâs prison guards became.
An escape game was a sort of âgame within a gameâ in which the players would make use of this feature and compete against each other.
In other words, players would deliberately wait and allow the prison guards to become stronger, and then try to beat each othersâ times.
Letâs say an A is waiting for 40 minutes and escaping in 30 minutes. Then a B was waiting for 40 minutes and escaping in 29 minutes.
B would have a higher score, as they had escaped quicker.
Dreamgate, seeing how much players were enjoying this, created an actual record board.
They created a device at the entrance, which would quickly pass the time, and a ranking board at the exit, which would record how much time had passed, as well as how long it took to clear.
âThey want to decide the winner using this escape game,â Soo Ah said.
âExactly. And the winners get a juicy reward from the losers.â
Tae Gyu nodded his head.
âAre you going to do it or not?â
Se Hwa looked at her provokingly.
âWhy do I need to have a match with you in the first place?â
âIf you win, then I wonât stir up trouble ever again,â Se Hwa tempted.
However, Soo Ah wasnât convinced in the least.
âNot really interested. After Dungeon Conquering Man is over, we wonât really meet much anyway.â
âWho knows, itâs a small world.â
âSo youâll eventually see me again!â.
âAre you so sure? I donât think youâll last that long,â Soo Ah said icily.
âIt doesnât matter; you wonât make it very far anyway!â
âYou!â
âWhat!?â
It quickly turned into an emotional battle. Jae Woo grabbed Soo Ahâs shoulder.
âCalm down. Letâs hear what they have to say, ok?â
Jae Woo stared at Yoon Se Hwa and asked, âIf you win, what will Soo Ah have to do for you?â
âItâs simple. She gets on her knees and says âI was wrongâ in front of me.â
âThat sounds like something you should be doing for her, not the other way around.â
After all, Soo Ah was the victim here!
âWhat did you say!?â
Yoon Se Hwa stared at him venomously as if sheâd kill him.
Jae Woo didnât back down and stared directly at her. It was like there were sparks between them.
At that moment, Park Tae Gyu intervened.
âI have a requirement too.â
âWe havenât agreed yet,â Jae Woo said firmly.
However, Tae Gyu wouldnât stop.
âIf we win, then you work for the Jairus Guild for a year. Ah, youâll have to share all of the information on the adamantium too, as itâs for the guild!â
In other words, if he won, then the Jairus Guild would work him like a dog.
Normally, people wouldnât agree to such a bet when the terms were so outrageous.
But heâd made the offer anyway, which meantâŠ
âHe starts off strong, and then slowly lowers it as if heâs doing me a favor. Thereâs no reason to play his game.â
Jae Woo, whoâd finished thinking, replied, âThen if we win, then Iâll work you like a dog. Youâll have to do your best and commit yourself to me.â
âFine, Iâll work you like a dog!â
Tae Gyu momentarily recoiled.
Heâd expected Jae Woo to say something along the lines of âThe terms are outrageousâ, but heâd accepted the terms straight away.
At that momentâŠ
It seemed like things were getting out of hand, so Soo Ah grabbed Jae Wooâs collar.
âOppa.â
âAh, thatâs only if⊠we accept the match.â
Jae Woo grinned.
âLetâs not do it. I donât want you to get caught up in my business.â
âAh, thatâs not what this is about. You probably got caught up in my business. Isnât that right, Mr. Park Tae Gyu?â
Jae Woo was sure that Tae Gyu had constructed this plan.
There was no way someone like Yoon Se Hwa couldâve come up with a plan that made use of the escape game.
âWe just came to an understanding.â
Tae Gyu smiled.
âSoo Ah and I have some things to talk about, so could you please give us some space?â Jae Woo asked.
âUnderstood.â
âHmph.â
Tae Gyu and Yoon Se Hwa left the waiting room.
âOppa, you canât accept their offer,â Soo Ah firmly said.
On the other hand, Jae Woo wanted to accept the bet.
He was confident that he could win, and he wanted to show them the bitter taste of defeat too.
Not to mentionâŠ!
Jae Woo had seen how draining this relationship was on Soo Ah, so he wanted to use this opportunity to unburden her.
âDonât you want to cut her out of your life?â
âI-I do, butâŠâ
Her eyes quivered.
Jae Woo grabbed her hands and said, âThen letâs do it.â
