Chris drove behind Nance, staying about 60-70 feet away. There werenât many cars on the road, but Nance didnât notice her following him.
Looking at Nance through the window, it could be seen that he was talking to someone while driving. He kept moving toward the shotgun seat and his mouth seemed to be moving.
Was there someone there?
There shouldnât be one. At least, she couldnât see anyone from the back. It wasnât possible unless the person wasnât as tall as the seat or was a kid.
This was impossible though. Sheâd been following Nance the entire time, but Nance never stopped. No one came on midway either.
Nanceâs behavior was just very strange.
Suddenly, a car from the other direction drove past with far headlights. When the lights shone over, Chris felt her vision blurring. The next moment, she saw a womanâs figure sitting beside Nance.
The woman turned and looked at Chris.
âHow is there a woman in Nanceâs car?â
Chris looked again, but she was gone. Did she see it wrong? Or was she blocked by the seat again?
Chris felt unsettled. A bad feeling shrouded her heart.
âWhereâs the car? Where did it go?â
Whoosh.
Suddenly, Chris heard breathing behind her. Light flashed in her rear-view mirror and there seemed to be a woman sitting in the backseat.
âAh!â Chris twisted the steering wheel in fear.
Thud.
The car crashed and Chrisâ forehead started bleeding. Thankfully, she hadnât been driving fast and it didnât cause a car accident. However, sheâd run into the taxi in the other lane.
âD*mmit. Get out of the car, *sshole. You know how to drive?â
Hearing the angry roars, Chris could only unbuckle her seatbelt. When she saw the taxi driver, she said, âIâm sorry. Iâm so sorry. Itâs my fault. How much is it? Iâll pay you.â
âI knew itâs a woman driver!â Vincent yelled, gesticulating madly. âYou dented my car door. Three hundred dollars.â
Chris was pissed. If you want $300 just for that scratch, why donât you go rob a bank instead? she thought.
âNo. No way am I giving you $300. Iâll give you $100 at most.â
âYou know that itâll cost $100 just to go into the repair shop? Donât drive on the road if you canât pay. You scratched my car last time. You might run someone over next time, you know?â
Vincentâs words were too infuriating. Anger burned inside Chris. Sheâd already been close to losing control of her emotions and broke down after getting yelled at.
Thudâ
âMotherf*cker, say that again! Iâm gonna rip your mouth off!â
âB*tch, you think Iâm scared? I donât care if youâre a girl. Iâll hit you until not even your mother can recognize you!â
âAlright, Vincent.â Chen Zhao finally came out of the car. âHello, Chris. We meet again.â
âYouâre⊠Oh, youâre that guy from yesterday.â
Chris didnât have a deep impression of Chen Zhao. After all, Chen Zhao was only one of the countless people who asked for her number.
She remembered that Chen Zhao had given her a business card with only his number, but sheâd already tossed that out.
âVincent, itâs just a small scratch and you asked for $300? I think itâll be better if you go rob a bank.â
Seeing Chen Zhaoâs eyes, Vincent immediately looked away. âFine, because of you, Iâll just take $200. Nothing less. Hand it over.â
Chris glanced at the scratch. She was thinking this number too, but the problem was that she didnât bring money.
âUh, I didnât bring that much money. Can I give it to you some other time?â
Americans were used to using credit cards. Most people wouldnât have more than $100 in cash with them.
âI donât know you. How do I know if youâre lying? Give me the money now.â
âVincent, Iâll give you the money.â
âUhâŠhow can I let you do that?â Chris grew troubled.
âItâs no big deal. You can pay me back.â
âSure.â Chris didnât like owing people, but she really couldnât find $200 right now. She didnât even have that in her bank. âIâll pay you back when I have money.â
âYou can pay me whenever you wish. But can I have your number?â
âOh, rightâŠâ Chris took out her phone and they exchanged numbers.
âThen, goodbye.â
âGoodbye.â
âOh right⊠Your backseatâŠâ
Whooshâ
Vincent had already started the engine and Chen Zhao lost his temper. âVincent, canât you see that Iâm trying to flirt?â
âChen, you already know enough pretty girls. You should control yourself. When I saw you get out of that womanâs house yesterday, your legs were trembling.â
âThatâs because I sat on the toilet for too long. If blood doesnât circulate well through your legs, theyâll be numb temporarily.â
âYeah, sure, I believe you.â
âŠ
Chris was still at the crash site. Sheâd heard what Chen Zhao had said.
He didnât finish, but his words still terrified her. Backseat? What was Chen trying to say?
Was there something in her backseat?
Chris looked back at the empty car. Was there someone there? OrâŠsomething?
She didnât dare get in the car. Was there something in there or not?
She took out her phone and stared at Chen Zhaoâs number. In the end, she called. âHey, Chen. Itâs me, Chris.â
âIs something wrong?â
âYou didnât finish. What were you going to say?â
âI was going to ask if that beauty in your backseat is your friend. I was going to ask for her number.â
There really was someone in the backseat!
âChen, thereâs someone in the backseat? I didnât see anyone.â
âAre you blind? There was a woman!â
âBullsh*t. There was no one there. If there was, I wouldâve seen, especially if itâs a pretty girl.â
âI donât want to argue with you. I need to talk to Chris.â Turning back to the phone, Chen Zhao said, âChris, are you still here?â
âIâm hereâŠChen, youâŠcan you come back?â

âWhatâs wrong?â
âYou said you saw another woman in my car?â
âYeah. Is there a problem?â
âButâŠI didnât see⊠No, more specifically, I looked and then I crashed the car. Chen, please, can you come back? Iâm scared⊠I believe thereâs something in my car, but itâs definitely not my friend.â
Chen Zhaoâs expression changed. Putting a hand over his phone, he said, âVincent, are you sure you didnât see anyone?â
