The misunderstanding with the girl called Kiriha had finally been cleared up. That was great and all but the problem came afterwards⦠Once Kiriha learned that I might be able to save Amakoās mother, she started to blame herself even more.
I had to move away from her because of how long she was blaming herself.
Kiriha was kneeling down on the ground before me at the moment but that didnāt make me any less uncomfortable. I was a little surprised people in this world also bowed down to someone to apologize.
āItās okay, Usato doesnāt mind. Heās a little awkward but heās a nice person.ā
āBut⦠I did a lot of violent things to himā¦ā
āLeaving the āawkwardā part aside, itās just like Amako said, I donāt mind. You have your own circumstances too. And look, Iām uninjured.ā
I squatted down and presented my hand to Kiriha who was still prostrated. It was the hand she injured this morning. The wounds were cured in a flash with magic and my hand didnāt have a single scratch on it. Kiriha looked up and took my hand to carefully examine it. After a few moments, she spoke in astonishment,
āIām convinced since I know you used healing magic but⦠To think a genuine healer could do this much honestly amazes me⦠There are no traces of your injury too.ā
āDo you know someone else that can use healing magic?ā
āI know one other person but they donāt use it.ā
They donāt use it⦠The fact that they were able to study here without using it is really something. If possible, I wanted to ask more about this topic but Kiriha had finally raised her head. Iāll find another chance to ask about it.
We didnāt come here to receive an apology. It was to let Amako meet her friend. That was why I wasnāt really bothered by the fact that I was attacked by Kiriha. It was trivial in comparison.
āI said it before, but I really donāt mind. I have a general understanding of how people view the beast kin here. Thatās why I donāt blame you for misunderstanding the situation and thinking that I was trying to capture you. It was also partly my fault because of how I acted so weāre even.ā
I really overdid it this time.
There was no need to receive that fist of hers; I should have tried to persuade her more with words. I guess I couldnāt help but want to test how much I had grown from my training.
Iām too immature and inexperienced. I still had a long way to go just like Rose had said.
āHa-haha⦠What a strange person. I was shivering in fear because of what you might demand from me. As expected of the person Amako brought along with her, I should say. Really⦠Such a strange human.ā
āThereās no way my eyes would be mistaken about his character.ā
āI agree with that⦠Thereās no way Amakoās eyes could be wrong.ā
Kiriha laughed at my words and finally got off the ground while patting the dust off her tail.
Since Kiriha had just come out from her house, she was wearing some plain and simple clothes instead of the robe that she wore this morning. It was probably to conceal her ears and her tail.
ā¦Most of her tail was white in color with a light brown tip. It didnāt resemble a fox or a dog tail⦠I wonder what type of beast she is. She reminds me a bit of the Japanese youkai,Ā Kamaitachi, so maybe sheās part of the weasel family? Itās possible. Either way, sheās definitely someone I couldnāt introduce to Inukami-senpai.
āUsato, itās not polite to keep looking at her like that.ā
āHahaha, sorry sorry.ā
āReally, youāre quite a strange human. When other humans see my appearance, they immediately look at me with scorn. You donāt do that.ā
I wasnāt someone from this world after all.
Besides, I was one of the people that found animal ears to be cute. I doubt many people from my world would hate them.
Letās leave those worthless thoughts of mine aside for now⦠I just noticed that Kiriha had presented her hand in front of me. When I made eye contact with her, she blushed.
Amako seemed to be urging me from the side⦠Were we just shaking hands?
While feeling a little embarrassed, I lightly took a hold of her hand.\nāā¦.Umm.. Yeah, I didnāt get to introduce myself yet. Iām Kiriha. Iām attending the senior classes here at school.ā
āIām Usato, a healing magician of the Rescue Squad in Lyngle Kingdom. Well, I guess this is sort of like a handshake to make up with each other.ā
With this, it looks like Amako and Kiriha would finally have a chance to talk with each other.
āAh, this wonāt do. I was in the middle of making dinner. The people who headed out will be returning home soon⦠If you would like, how about staying here to eat? I still want to apologize for what I did.ā
āOr at least I thought so until Kiriha directed the conversation towards me again.
āDinner, huhā¦ā
It was still a little early, plus they might have something prepared for me back at the inn⦠It might be awkward to eat with the people who live here too. It seemed like a better idea to leave Amako alone here to talk with her friend.
āErm⦠Tā Nn?ā
As I was about to reject Kirihaās offer, Amako pulled on the sleeve of my uniform. She looked up and our eyes met. Although her face was expressionless, she made a humble request.
āUsato, you should eat too?ā
ā¦ā¦..
āā¦..I guess I have no choiceā¦ā
Amako really knew how to handle me.
Salra-san left me with the responsibility of looking after her⦠I probably didnāt want Amako to feel lonely in any way.
Kiriha was already energetically talking about preparing my portion of the meal once she saw my exchange with Amako. Since it had come to this, I didnāt really have much choiceā¦
āYou donāt have to mind the people living here. Come now, while I canāt call it a luxurious meal, I have some confidence in my skills so youāll be in for a treat.ā
While opening the door that had been kicked open, Kiriha urged us to come inside. Amako and I walked towards the entrance and looked inside.
āāThe inside was similar to the housing in the Rescue Squad. It wasnāt that spacious but there was a table that could seat about 10 people. I could also see stairs that led to the second floor.
āItās⦠a nice place.ā
āIs that sarcasm? Or do you really think so?ā
āI live in a similar place in Lyngle Kingdom. I really think itās a nice place. I feel really comfortable here.ā
I wonder how Felm was doing? Was she energetic? Was she eating regularly? She was probably skipping out on training and getting beaten up by Rose but she was still my Kouhai. I should at least wish for her well-being in my mind. Yeah, in my mind.
āAre you spacing out? ā¦.Letās quickly go inside?ā
āNn⦠Aah, sorry.ā

Looks like I was lost in thought for a moment there. Following Kiriha, we reached the table and chairs I saw earlier. I could see steam coming out of a room deeper in the house⦠Was that the kitchen?
Kiriha looked back towards the door. It seemed to have been broken from her kick as it couldnāt close properly.
āAhahaha⦠I guess it was a little rash of me to kick the door open like that.ā
āKiriha, you never think things through first. I was close to being hit by you when you jumped out the door. Actually, I did get hit by the door when it opened.ā
āThatās why I said Iām sorry⦠Iām going to prepare dinner, you can sit anywhere. Iāll be done in a moment.ā
Kiriha seemed to be using that as an excuse to escape Amakoās reproachful eyes. I lightly chuckled at seeing her escape and sat down to take a breather just like I had been told.\nAmako then sat down on the seat next to me. I wonder if she sat in that same chair the last time she lived here. Amako was deep in thought as she sat down, as if she were reminiscing.
āIām glad you could visit your friend, Amako.ā
āā¦.Thank you for taking me here, Usato.ā
āI still havenāt saved your mother yet so itās still a bit early to thank me.ā
āButā¦. Thank you.ā
ā¦.Really, Iām troubled. If you show me such a meek expression, I really donāt know how to react. Despite the fact that I havenāt fulfilled your request yetā¦
Although she played an indirect role in preventing the Kingdomās ruin and the death of my close friends, it didnāt change the fact that she saved the lives of many people.
I didnāt lose my friends and companions.
The one who should really give their thanks was me.
āYou saved my two friends and a lot of other peopleās lives. Thatās why I want to grant your wish⦠As much as I can.ā
āAs much as you can huh⦠You really are weird, Usato.ā
Like I said many times, Iām normal and not weird.
I continued the conversation by talking about what happened with Kazuki and Inukami-senpai when I just woke up. Of course, I was referring to the āThereās no wayā responses I got when I said I was normal. Amako listened while resting her chin on the table. She even gave an uncharacteristically bright smile.
āYou finally smiled but to think it would be because of this⦠Looks like I really am weird.ā
āIt would be a problem if you become any weirder.ā
When youāre the one saying it, I feel like that might just happenā¦
I didnāt know what kind of girl Amako was when we first met but Iām just glad sheās able to smile like this now.
ā¦.Well then, how was I supposed to surprise her? There wasnāt much point of a conversation with Amako if she could just foresight what I was going to say next. I had to think several steps ahead of herā¦
It was worth a try. Just as I was about to speak to Amako, she was looking back toward the entrance and the broken door. I turned around to look behind me and saw that that someone had arrived at the front door.
āEh? The door is⦠Did something happen⦠hereā¦?ā
āAhh, my stomach is growling. Nn? Why are you just standing thereā¦ā¦ā¦.! Who are you!?ā
Two beast kin had arrived from the entrance. One girl and one boy. The girl seemed to be around Amakoās age and had a tail that resembled a catās. The other beast kin was the boy who was just a bit shorter than Kiriha and had similar characteristics.
The girl was in a daze as she looked at me and Amako. The moment the boy saw me, he moved toward me, hostility emanating with every step.ā The patterns on his arms and legs resembled the ones I had seen on Kirihaās.
However, I had learned from the previous experience and surrendered before he began his attack.
āW-wait, Iām someone that escorted Amako and came here! Iām definitely not someone suspicious!ā
I was used to getting hurt by now, but itās not like that made it any less painful.
If I could avoid getting injured, I would do so.
āHaah, Amako you say?ā He ignored my words and continued his advance. āIf youāre going to lie, you should make up a better⦠oneā¦..ā
Upon seeing Amako sitting behind me, his tail froze. Shocked, he pointed at Amako and shouted. āAmako!! YouāYouāre alive!ā
The boy, who seemed to be familiar with Amako, stared with his eyes wide open, while the girl didnāt show much of a reaction. The girl was peeking out from behind the boy. Iām guessing she didnāt know Amako?
Theyāre both beast kin⦠Of course. If they were both human, the boy in front of me wouldnāt be reacting like this right now.
āNn, itās been a while, Kyou. This person isnāt an enemy.ā
āNot an enemy⦠But just from a glance, heās very suspicious!!ā
āā¦.I agree that heās someone who certainly looks suspicious but⦠You shouldnāt speak poorly of him.ā\n\nāThe reason I came with Amako today was to ask if you guys could give her a place to stay.ā
āEh? ā¦.Is that so?ā
Amako, I thought you already knew. She seemed to be surprised and Kyou doubtfully looked at me. It was probably awkward for him to make eye contact with me as he quickly looked away and sat down. He didnāt say anything so I looked in Kirihaās direction.
āKiriha, could I count on you to look after Amako during our stay in Luquis? We would be at ease and sleep soundly at night if Amako were to stay with you guys.ā
āIād be happy to! We have countless rooms available and the cost of food for one or two more people isnāt much. I donāt mind at all!ā
āI see, Iām gladā¦ā
It was obviously better for Amako to be at a place with her own race rather than sleeping with us.
ā¦.Also we were important guests in this country right now. It would be a bad idea to draw unnecessary attention towards us. If Amakoās appearance were to be discovered in the middle of all this, I canāt say what might happen.
It didnāt really matter if we would gather attention but it was possible that some people may scheme to take Amako from us.
āThen, Iāll have to prepare two rooms.ā
It was probably fine to leave everything to Kiriha.
Sheāll definitely protect Amako. Additionally, there were people from her race here like Kyou and Satsuki. If theyāre here, I could just leave it toāāā Wait. Wait a moment.
āTwo rooms?ā
Two rooms? Just who else was she counting in addition to Amako?
I spoke out in confusion and Kiriha who saw my response replied with an āEh, was I wrong?ā expression.
āArenāt you also staying?ā
āā¦ā¦ā¦Hah?ā
It was really unexpected so I didnāt have a response.
āNee-chan! As expected, you canāt allow that!! If you let someone like him stay here⦠I-it would be bad, right!?ā
Kyou took the opportunity provided by my stunned silence to argue against my stay.  I had no idea how she interpreted that I would stay here but⦠Kyou, who had received a shock like never before, had spoken out for me instead.
āNo no, I mean it would be better for Amako to stay with him here, right? Itās okay, itās okay, thereās no need to worry. I had already prepared myself long ago for this possibility⦠Amako, you would rather be together with him, right?ā
āA-Amakoā¦ā
āā¦ā¦ā¦..ā
Kiriha brushed Kyou to the side and directed her question towards Amako. Kyou was shivering as he said Amakoās name and Amako who was being questioned seemed perplexed as she looked at me.
Amako, itāll only be for about 14 days. It was similar to entrusting you to another guardian; you should be fine even without me, right? To begin with, there was no way Amako would think it would better to have me stay here with herāāā
āā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦.If Usato is fine with it thenā¦ā
Youāre kidding right, Amakoā¦
The words that I imagined I wouldnāt hear really came out and the spoon in my hand fell down. Even though it would be harder for you to open up to your friend with me at your sideā¦
āUsato, thatās what Amako said. What do you want to do?ā
Kiriha said with a mischievous smile. Kyou was next to Kiriha blankly staring at me with jealousy while Satsuki was steadily watching me as she continued to take small bites of her bread.
At first, only I was looking at them but now the three of them were fervently looking at me⦠Just what was going on? I was trapped in every direction.
The way you said it was really unfair. Saying that āif iām fine with itāā¦
āā¦.Iāll need to immediately go to the other knights and ask them firstā¦ā
If you say it like that, there was no way I could possibly refuse, you know?
