Fei isnât here to join to astronomersâ argument, even if the possibilities they are raising intrigues her a little. Most of what theyâre talking about are ridiculous anyway.
She wants to ask more about Xie Ji instead.
âXie Ji?â Someone is looking at them oddly, âwhy are you asking about her?â
âHey hey, what do you mean by true or false? We all saw it, so obviously itâs true.â
âWell, yeah, but Xie Ji⊠I didnât even dare tell my parents about it. Theyâve got a bad heart at their age, so I donât want them panicking⊠Maybe, itâll be fine?â
âAre you even listening to yourself? The experts are all arguing because theyâre just armchair theorists! They might not even have the equipment at home to observe it, and theyâre simply working off existing theories, but weâŠâ
The person then points to the great structure of a telescope behind them, and asserts, âwe saw it ourselves!â
âYeah, we all didâŠâ
Fei has to interrupt them now, âI wanted to ask more about Xie JiâŠâ
âThatâs right, when Xie Ji came today, she looked really depressed so we asked her about it. Thatâs when she told us; we also told her to go easy on him, but she wouldnât budge an inch on the matter.
âDidnât they say Xie Ji comes from a family of soldiers? She sure got the personality down pat⊠I suspect it might be bad enough that their engagement would be called off this time aroundâŠâ
âNothing doing. Their views are unreconcilableâŠâ
Here, Fei narrows her eyes, as she gives Wu Jian a glance.
Wu Jian is muttering, âwhy do I feel like this might have actually happened?â
Fei then ominously continues, âthen Ke Zhu sees with his own eyes, that his girlfriend who wanted to break up because he wouldnât trust her, die in the Raining Hellfire that he was adamant was fakeâŠâ
Wu Jian gasps, and murmurs, âthat must be a lifelong trauma.â
Fei is still slightly concerned though. Something isnât adding up.
But thinking more about it, she canât pin it down exactly.
âWell yeahâŠâ Someone replies, pointing to the Space Agency behind them, âitâs quite run down now, but thereâs far more than the eye can see underground. I heard that theyâre emptying out the Museum, and securely storing the collections here.â
Oh, so thatâs why Ke Zhu is driving his box truck here. Fei gets it now.
âWe saw them move all the valuables around these few days when weâre camping out here. Itâs a shame⊠weâre all going to die anyway.â
Someone laments.
Some dissenting voices are also heard, though, âif Xie Ji didnât see that thingâŠâ
âDonât blame her. To be honest, Iâm glad I at least know why Iâm going to die.â
Fei, though, picks up something from the wording, âXie Ji, she was the first person to observe the unidentified object?â
âThe first in the entire world!â Someone says proudly, and then bitterly smiles, adding, ânot that thatâs something youâd ring home about, though.
It was less than a week ago, I think, when we had one of our regularly scheduled space observation activities; after the madness spread, we would come here every so often to try and maintain and clean the telescope.
Anyway, at that activity a few days ago, Xie Ji saw that thing⊠I donât really know why or how, but like, her face went ghostly pale after she saw it.
She wouldnât tell us what she saw, but it was painfully obvious something was wrong from the way she looked. And after that, we all saw it.
A few of us who were there that day who werenât regulars were on the verge of fainting, too. We get why she wasnât willing to say anything⊠Who could have thought? Something is flying right for you overhead, and you have no idea since when itâs been there!â
âTch, youâre the one who was close to fainting!â
âShut up; anyway, then the news got out and the world knew⊠Well, I suppose it would have been someone else if not us, but we saw it the earliest, probably because we happen to be in the right place at the right time⊠To see the bell that is due to give us our death knell. Ho.â
âHey, you know Xie Ji is actually pretty admirable in that regard, and we can all learn from her⊠She said that, what, âI fear a lot, but death is not one of themâ or something like that when she broke the news?â
âWho cares about that. Iâm scared of death; itâs only human.â
âIâm still in my 20s. I havenât even had a date with anyone. I havenât even enjoyed life. When our boss went mad and gave us a year of paid leave, the next second youâre telling me the world is over⊠Damn it, damn it all, what the hell.â
The mood is at its lowest so far.
Someone then asks, âhow long do we have?â
âAn hour⊠or less. Maybe just 40, 50 minutes.â
âA countdown to finality, huh.â
âJust fucking shut your trap. Iâm going to live, Iâm going to live long after this. Iâll hide inside when it comes; maybe it canât kill me.â
âYeah, yeah, good luck with that.â
âHa, Iâm going to take you up on thatâŠâ
Fei stops tuning into their arguments. Instead, she mutters, âso Xie Ji was the first person to see the object? The very first one?â
Wu Jian quietly points out, âit seems⊠like an important identity?â
Fei is quiet for a bit, and finally, she says with a forced smile, âif we didnât know the Tower resident was a guy, Iâd have put Xie Ji down as the only possible owner of this Nightmare.â
âYes, if we simply look at all the clues we have in the Nightmare so far. Xie Ji is the most owner-like candidate here, butâŠâ Wu Jian points out, âhow could that possibly be?!â
